After having been defeated by Papal troops at Mentana on November 3, 1867, Garibaldi's Volunteers withdraw from Papal States to seek refuge in the Italian Kingdom. A Company of Volunteers (3 platoons) is marching to a mountain pass guarded by a platoon of Papal Line Infantry; a half Company of Papal Zouaves (2 platoons), however, are in hot pursuit. The Volunteers must make a choise: full attack on the pass garrison (hoping to quickly overwhelm it), ambush the prosecutors or pin them down with a rearguard while storming the pass.
